Professional Development

In February, 2021, DFAM initiated a new stylist professional development program in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The program recognizes that there are stylists at work every day in the communities DFAM visits to host its pop-up events. These stylists' access to high-quality professional development, however, is limited. DFAM’s professional development program ofers virtual and live education opportunities to enhance these stylists’ skills and foster stylist communities in the places DFAM visits. We bring top-quality hair educators together with local talent to offer haircutting and barbering classes. This model not only offers professional instruction to stylists at dierent skill levels, but also extends an opportunity to top local talent to learn how to become professional educators. In addition, DFAM distributes high-quality haircutting tools (shears and clippers) as well as styling products to participants in live classes. The professional development program will contribute to the earnings potential of stylists, create a pipeline of new DFAM volunteers, and bolster targeted communities’ capacity to deliver high-quality wellness and self-care services.
